Dr. Federico Subervi’s most recent academic work was as Full Professor at the School of Journalism & Mass Communication and as Provost Faculty Associate for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Kent State University in Ohio, where he helped develop the College of Communication and Information doctoral program while continuing his research about Latinos and media issues. At his previous job, he was Full Professor and Director of the Center for the Study of Latino Media and Markets at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Texas State University. He’s also been a professor at the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of California at Santa Barbara.
Subervi earned his BA in Social Sciences and his MA in Public Communication from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus. His Ph.D. in Mass Communication was earned at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Since the early 1980s, he has been conducting research, publishing and teaching on a broad range of issues related to the mass media and ethnic minorities, especially Latinos in the United States. In addition to more than fifty journal articles, essays, book chapters and reports on these subjects, he is the editor and an author of the book The Mass Media and Latino Politics. Studies of U.S. Media Content, Campaign Strategies and Survey Research: 1984-2004 (NY: Routledge, 2008). In 2012, the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication honored him with the Lionel L. Barrow, Jr. Award for Distinguished Achievement in Diversity Research and Education.
Currently, Subervi divides his time between his duties as President of the Association for Latino Media & Markets Communication Research, Chair of the Ethnicity & Race Division of the International Communication Association, Secretary of the Board of Directors of the Latino Public Radio Consortium, Chair of the Advisory Committee of the Board of Directors of Latinarrific.com, and various research projects related to the mass media in Puerto Rico, his home country. To help the Latino community in Texas, from 2002-2007 he served as Chair of the Board of Directors of Latinitas, Inc., a non-profit organization whose vision is to empower Latino youth through media and technology. This organization had its genesis in one of Subervi’s classes at UT-Austin in 2002.
From 2013-15, he directed a project that developed a Latino Oriented News Literacy program for college and high school teachers. That program, made possible thanks to a grant from the McCormick Foundation via the Center for News Literacy at Stony Brook University, took place at Roosevelt University in the summers of 2014 & 2015. With support from the Communications Workers of America and the Newspaper Guild, he has analyzed how Latinos and Latino issues, as well as labor and labor issues were covered by national TV network news (ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN) from 2008-2014. Among other recent projects, in 2011 with funding from the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility, he completed a study on the research methodologies utilized to study Hispanic consumers by national consumer research companies. A summary of the findings were published as a chapter in the 2012 book, Win! The Hispanic Market, edited by Isabel Valdés. In 2010, with a grant from the McCormick Foundation, he conducted a study and authored a report entitled “Am Achilles Heel in Emergency Communications: The Deplorable Policies and Practices Pertaining to Non-English Speaking Populations.” From 2006-2008, he directed two research projects, one funded by the Ford Foundation, the other by the Social Science Research Council, which analyzed the diversity of Latino-oriented media in Central Texas.
Dr. Subervi has been Fulbright Research Professor in Brazil (1988-89) and in Chile (2011). He has also been UNESCO professor at the Universidade Metodista de São Paulo, and visiting professor at the University of Amsterdam, the Universidad Diego Portales and the University of Santiago in Chile, the Universidad Federal de Río Grande do Norte en Natal-Brazil, the University of Zeppelin in Germany, and St. Petersburg State University in Russia. Subervi has delivered academic presentations in numerous other universities in the U.S. and Latin America, and was one of the cultural consultants for Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer and for Scholastic Entertainment’s The Misadventures of Maya and Miguel. He also serves as advisor for PBS’ Oh Noah!
