Abstract: Successful approaches to media literacy can take many forms in contemporary classrooms. Dolores D’Angelo discusses an interdisciplinary unit in which film and graphic novels are used to examine works of classic and contemporary literature such as 1984, The Giver and The Road. Working with the theme of power and man’s control or lack of control over human nature, students in an English class use film and newsreel clips to set the scene. Graphic novels and television clips are used to further the discussion of this theme. Student facility with technology helps develop projects and papers based on a variety of media.
Author Bio: Dolores D’Angelo, Ph.D., is the former Coordinator of the Communication Arts Program at Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, MD.
As a teacher an administrator in the Montgomery County School System, Dr. D’Angelo developed a unique program of instruction that featured interdisciplinary studies in humanities and media education.
Dr. D’Angelo is a graduate of Simmons College, Boston, MA with a BA and MA in English. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, College Park in English Education.
She is currently the CEO of Magnet Consultants, LLC, an education and health consulting firm. She also works with student teachers at American University in Washington, DC, as an adjunct faculty member.
