David W. Brown has helped guide the strategic marketing direction for mission-focused organizations throughout his 30+ year career. He currently serves as the Visiting Assistant Professor of Instruction for the School of Media and Communication at Temple University. He also serves as Founder and Managing Director for the Marketing Collaborative — a non-profit advertising and public relations practice dedicated to serving other mission-focused nonprofits.
Prior to being named to the Visiting Assistant Professor post at Temple, Brown served as Executive Director of the West Philadelphia Alliance for Children (WePAC) – a nonprofit that re-opened formerly closed libraries in urban public elementary schools as a systemic approach to improving childhood literacy in underserved communities.
Brown is an ordained Reverend in the United Methodist Church and has provided strategic communications counsel in faith-based settings locally, nationally and globally around issues including same sex marriage, immigration reform, African American history and public education. He is a published author of “Freedom Drawn from Within” which examines the historic role that African Americans have played in forming the modern African American church.
A past recipient of the Speaker of the Year by the Pennsylvania Communication Society, Brown was inducted to the Public Relations Hall of Fame by the Philadelphia Public Relations Association (PPRA). He is the only living person of color to be given this honor. Brown also has the distinction of being the only person to have served over his career as both the President of the Public Relations Society of America’s (PRSA) Philadelphia chapter and the Philadelphia Advertising Club.
A frequent columnist for The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Business Journal and Philadelphia Tribune as well as various trade publications, Brown has served as General Manager for 900 AM WURD – Pennsylvania’s only black-owned talk radio station. He was also named a “Champion of Change” by the Obama Administration and has shared his insights on empowering communities at the White House.
A graduate of Duquesne University where he majored in Journalism, David is also a graduate of Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary (now Palmer Theological Seminary) where he received a Masters degree in Theology focusing on Public Policy. He has taught or served as a guest lecturer at Duquesne University, Lincoln University, the University of the Arts, Arcadia University, Philadelphia University, Temple, LaSalle and Rowan University (in New Jersey) as well as Salisbury University (MD). Brown has served as Board President of NAMLE since 2014. Pertinent links:
