Ioana Literat is an Assistant Professor in the Communication, Media and Learning Technologies Design program at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her research examines participatory online cultures, with a particular focus on youth creative participation.
In theorizing the nature of digital participation across socio-cultural spheres, her principal interest lies in the stakes involved. Therefore, agency and empowerment – be it social, creative, civic or educational empowerment – represent core aspects of her engagement with participatory cultures. Key questions driving her research agenda are: What is the role of new media technologies in young people’s lives? How do young people express themselves – creatively, socially, politically – in online spaces? And, how does online participation enable new forms of creativity, collaboration and learning?
Her work has been published in top venues across disciplines, including the Journal of Communication, New Media & Society, Communication Theory, the International Journal of Communication, the Journal of Media Literacy Education and Learning, Media & Technology, among others.
Ioana completed her PhD at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California, and her professional background is in media education and digital storytelling. Before starting her academic career, Ioana worked as the field coordinator of The Modern Story digital storytelling program, a grassroots project that facilitates media literacy and filmmaking workshops in Indian public schools. She has also taught filmmaking and social justice curricula to youth in the Dominican Republic, Romania, Uruguay and India.
