Zoey (Xuezhao) Wang


Zoey (Xuezhao) Wang is a PhD student in the joint doctoral program by University of Rhode Island (URI) and Rhode Island College (RIC). She serves as a research associate at Media Education Lab founded by Dr. Renee Hobbs at University of Rhode Island. She also works as a graduate assistant for the Innovation Lab at Rhode Island College. Zoey’s research interests lie in Media Literacy, Creativity, Youth Media and Popular Culture, Culture and Creative Industry, as well as International and Cross-cultural Media and Communication Studies. She is currently on the Steering Committee for GiveMe5 RI Youth Film Festival, a collaborative initiative of extending media education and art for children in Rhode Island. Since 2016, Zoey has taken the lead for the GiveMe5 Student Film Workshop research project on Creativity and Youth Media Productions. She has also organized student film workshops and served as an instructor. Zoey is currently working with Dr. Hobbs on a series of research projects about media literacy and online celebrity. In the meanwhile, Zoey is also working on a New York based documentary called Thread as a co-producer.
Prior to her doctoral studies, Zoey served as a co-author of Digital International Media Literacy E-book (dimle.org), interactive media representative for Gateway Media Literacy Partners, Inc., as well as a lecturer of International Media Literacy at Webster University in St. Louis. Previously, Zoey worked as a production assistant at NPR’s member station in St. Louis (KWMU) and an assistant producer at China Radio International (CRI) in Beijing. Beyond academia, she is a trained Peking Opera actor, filmmaker, photographer, musician, and a dancer.
