SciGirls is a PBS Kids series, website, and educational initiative that targets girls ages 8 to 13. It addresses a singular but powerful goal: to inspire, enable and maximize STEM learning and participation, encouraging greater interest in STEM careers. Each SciGirls half-hour episode follows a different group of enthusiastic girls and their mentor as they collaborate, communicate, engineer and investigate. They’re accompanied by two animated characters—Izzie and her best friend Jake, who tie the series together with their own ongoing STEM adventures. And because today’s girls largely live online, the SciGirls website on pbskids.org is totally integrated with the television series.
In its premiere season, SciGirls won the 2010-2011 Daytime Entertainment Emmy Award in the New Approached Children’s category, which recognizes innovation and excellence in the digital space. In 2013, the series is nominated for three Daytime Emmy Awards for its second season, comprised of ten shows.
